About
About UMKB
UMKB —Association for the Preservation and Curatorial Research of the Moving Image— is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, research, and dissemination of the moving image, understood from an expanded perspective that brings together experimental film, artist/auteur cinema, and post-cinematic practices with contemporary art, film and audiovisual archives, and publishing.
We start from a central premise: preservation alone does not guarantee the work's permanence. Physical conservation must be combined with strategies for access, format migration, and documentation that allow the work to continue to be viewed, reinterpreted, and placed in dialogue with new productions, audiences, and contexts. We understand the archive, therefore, not as a static repository but as a living archive.
For this reason, archiving, curation, publishing, education, residencies, and institutional cooperation function as complementary aspects of the same endeavor: to produce knowledge, foster contemporary creation, and expand access to, circulation of, and transmission of audiovisual heritage.
